"What happens when we die?" A daughters question.
My daughter asked me in the car today what it is called when some one dies and comes back as a kitty cat. I at first was taken back by the question. Where had she learned that? So as I got my senses back I smiled and I told her that when you die and come back to earth as someone else or something else it is called reincarnation. Many people believe that we are all tied together and when we die something special inside of us continues on to some other life. She smiled and me and said when she dies she is going to come back as a mermaid ^.^ . She asked me what i would come back as and I thought for a second and said I would probably come back as a dolphin. Jon perked up and said he was going to come back as a Shark. And with this topic of life after death out in the open I took an opportunity to go through some beliefs of what happens. I told her how some people believe in heaven and hell. How some people believed in reincarnation. And how some people believed that nothing happens when we die that its just like sleeping and never waking up again. I keep being amazed by Tori every day. She is no longer the little girl I use to know. She is intelligent. It just amazes me so much. I think my talk with about views of life after death was a good one. It was honest and open and allows her to know that there are many points of views out there and that we can never know which is the right one because in the end no one can come back and tell us which one is right.

My son only just turned 8 this month and we've briefly touched on this too but I don't think he is really "deep" enough yet to "get" it on the level Tori does. She is a really bright kid. I can't wait until Kaliana is older and we can have that kind of relationship. Not that now isn't important too but waiting is so hard.
We (Michael and I) ended up having a similar discussion after my grandmother died. She was Lutheran ~ most of my family is Catholic to some extent. My husband and I are some of the few that even dare to discuss the fact that heaven and hell aren't necessarily the only alternatives. My mom isn't happy about that at all but then she is a pretty opinionated human being.
As a child my education went like this:
k public grade school
1-5 private Catholic grade school
6-8 public middle school
9-10 private Catholic high school
11-12 public high school.
I resent my mother for trying to shove Catholicism down my throat all those years and refusing to even consider any alternatives. It is good to know there are other parents out there of children, who are turning out beautifully, who have the willingness to be open minded.
I am now 25 and have a vague idea of what my husband and I believe.
My younger brother? (22) Considered becoming a Catholic priest at one time. *rolls eyes* (he is such a golden boy, I swear)
My younger sister? (20) has no idea what she does or doesn't believe because right now she is waaaaay too busy acting out for attention to care.
What does the future hold? What happens when we die? I don't know. I know what I hope for I suppose. Although Tori was right, being a mermaid would be really, really cool!
On an off note you need to take her to Florida some time to see the mermaids of Weeki Wachee Springs. http://mermaid.weekiwachee.com/ Perhaps if she is old enough she can even go to "mermaid camp". My aunt (who is dieing of MS) was one of the "original" mermaids this show was based on. The show she was in was right here in Missouri down at the Lake of the Ozarks. It is no longer in business but the mermaids at Weeki Wachee are carrying on the legacy beautifully.
yay for golden boys ^.^ ... all though it makes it sooo much easier when we have sisters that do sooo much worse things than we do >.<
